About this work
In a cavernous, dim studio, a bearded man wearing a dark beret and pale smock sits at a small table cluttered with papers and a glass flask, his chin resting on one hand. Tools and a palette fade into the darkness behind him. At right, three men in broad hats, ruffled collars, and cloaks - one wrapped in a red sash - stand close together, watching silently from a pool of light.
Deep umber and black dominate, with warm ochre highlighting the seated figure's face and the visitors' collars. Light falls unevenly, carving forms from shadow in strong chiaroscuro; brushwork is broad in the darks, finer on the lit passages. The mood is quiet, weighted with tension between the solitary figure and his observers.
