About this work
In a dim studio, an old artist in a soft cap and loose robe sits slumped at a table strewn with papers, resting his cheek on one hand beside a jar of brushes; an easel and shelf of jars line the wall behind him. From the shadows at right, three men in wide-brimmed hats and seventeenth-century dress, one elderly with a white beard and lace collar, step forward to observe him.
Warm umber and ochre shadows dominate, broken by pale highlights on collars and cuffs in a Rembrandt-like chiaroscuro. The seated figure is loosely brushed while the approaching visitors are drawn with sharper edges, and the low, directional light heightens the sense of a tense, quiet interruption.
