About this work
A bearded elder clasps the shoulders of a bare-chested woman at the center of the composition, surrounded by hooded, heavily draped figures who lean in close, some touching her or each other. To the right a cloaked man kneels gripping a large bow, while further figures crouch among rocks and driftwood-like beams.
Built from dense charcoal blacks and rubbed grays, the drawing uses loose, gestural strokes for the drapery and tighter modeling for the faces and exposed skin, leaving the paper bare for highlights. The crowded, huddled grouping and heavy shadow create a tense, foreboding mood of confrontation or ritual.
