About this work
Snow blankets the embankment and rooftops beside a St. Petersburg canal, where a pedestrian bridge topped by a gilded winged-lion finial crosses toward pastel yellow and pink townhouses. A lone figure in dark clothing crosses the span, parked cars cluster at the near balustrade, and bare trees frame the view.
Muted pinks, ochres and greys, softened by overcast light, are built up with visible, broken strokes that render snow as thick, slightly textured white. The low winter sun barely warms the gilding on the statue, and the hushed, even tonality gives the quiet street a cold, still calm.
