About this work
Two dark, barely differentiated silhouettes rise against a densely patterned ground of small brick- and stone-like tesserae in muted rose, tan and olive; each figure is crowned by a glowing crescent of light suggesting a halo, and a small green leafy sprig grows at the lower edge of the canvas.
The palette stays very dark and desaturated, built from close-value browns and mauves so the figures nearly dissolve into the textured background, while the halos are picked out in bright, stippled gold and cream. The heavy shadow and worn, low-contrast surface give the piece a hushed, mysterious presence rather than a clearly legible scene.
