About this work
Two robed silhouettes, largely merged with a dark, mottled blue-violet ground, stand side by side, each marked by a bright crescent halo above the head; between them a single leafy green branch rises from the base of the canvas, its foliage the only sharply defined element in the scene. Small strings of colored dots hang near the figures like beads of light.
The composition is painted almost entirely in close, dark blue and purple tones with a mottled, cloud-like surface, against which the golden halos and green branch read as isolated bright accents. The heavy shadow and indistinct figures create a hushed, nocturnal, mysterious mood, with the sprig of leaves offering the only note of clarity and growth.
