About this work
Near-black shadow fills most of the canvas, with a small cluster of rounded, indistinct forms emerging in the lower center - perhaps the toy named in the title, though darkness leaves its identity uncertain. A warm ochre patch glows at lower left and a soft yellow-green smudge of light appears upper right.
Blacks, deep browns, and blues dominate the palette, applied in thick impasto with dragged, scraped strokes that build a rough, tactile surface. Light picks out only the pale round shapes and the glowing corner, while the rest dissolves into shadow, giving a somber, enigmatic feel closer to a study in darkness than a legible still life.
