About this work
A stylized bird with bold, curving wing and tail feathers occupies the upper right of the sheet, its sharp beak and small round eye clearly defined. A long quill-like feather crosses diagonally through the centre. At lower left, a distorted, open-mouthed face emerges from a mass of spiraling curls and netted texture, surrounded by small round motifs resembling shells or coiled eyes that fill the remaining space.
The print is worked entirely in black ink on white paper, built up from fine parallel hatching, spiraling curls and dense cross-hatched darks. Stark contrast between untouched white paper and solid black passages gives the linework an intense, almost obsessive density. The intertwining of bird, feather and face creates a strange, unsettling, dreamlike image, closer to a fantastical vision than a naturalistic study.
