About this work
A crowned woman in a pale gown stands at the center of a crowded, theatrical scene, cradling a red fox- or dog-like creature against her chest; a mustached man in dark dress leans close behind her. Around them a dense throng of half-lit faces and semi-nude figures presses in, and at the right a horned, red devil-like head with flaming eyes emerges from swirling smoke.
Deep reds, blacks and glowing golds saturate the entire canvas, with the crowned figure picked out in pale cream against the surrounding fire-lit crowd. Thick, dragged brushwork and smeared faces dissolve into the background murk, building a feverish, theatrical charge appropriate to a diabolical masquerade.
