About this work
A snow-covered embankment runs beside a frozen canal in Saint Petersburg, spanned by a low stone bridge and lined with an ornate cast-iron lamppost in the foreground. Rows of ochre and terracotta apartment buildings rise along the street to the right, where pedestrians in red and pink coats trudge through slush past a snow-dusted car and bare trees.
The palette stays close to soft greys, muted pinks, and warm ochres under a flat, overcast sky. Thick, textured brushstrokes build up the snow and stone surfaces, while the diffused winter light and hazy silhouettes of distant buildings give the scene a hushed, cold stillness typical of loose plein-air impressionism.
