About this work
A weathered chunk of white coral, its surface pitted with countless small holes and cavities, rests in a shallow scoop of pale beach sand. Tiny colored glass marbles are scattered around its base, half-sunk into the sand, while a strip of turquoise sea and white foam appears along the upper edge of the composition.
Rendered in soft whites, creams and pale ochres, the coral's porous texture is built up with careful, textured brushwork that catches warm sunlight and cool shadow within each hollow. The close, almost macro framing and quiet, precise handling give the piece the feel of a still-life study of a found natural object at the shoreline.
