About this work

An elderly bald man sits half-turned, his weathered face and folded, veined hands rendered in close detail. He wears a dark jacket and grey waistcoat over a white shirt, with rows of medal ribbons and a small medal pinned to his chest. Behind him strands of barbed wire crisscross a bare, smoky-grey ground, evoking memories of war rather than any literal room.

Muted greys and browns dominate, broken only by the warm flesh tones of the face and hands and the small bright reds of the ribbons. Thick, textured brushstrokes build the jagged wire and rough backdrop, while the face is modeled with careful academic precision. The contrast lends the portrait a somber, dignified gravity.
