About this work
A many-domed stone cathedral fills the composition, its weathered ochre and pink walls patterned with blind arcading, narrow window slits, and stepped gables. Rounded cupolas topped with crosses rise against a heavy, darkening sky, while a strip of dark grass and low trees anchors the building at the base of the canvas.
Thick, visible brushstrokes build the textured stone surface in warm ochre, rust, and pale blue-grey, lit as if by ground-level floodlights that pick out the domes and cornices while the sky recedes into deep indigo. The nocturnal lighting and loose, painterly handling give the ancient structure a hushed, mysterious presence.
