About this work
A low stone bridge spans a canal, its arch reflected in the dark water below alongside the glow of lit windows and lamps from buildings on the far bank. The reflections break into fragmented streaks of gold, pink and white across the rippling surface, while a shadowed embankment wall sits in the lower right.
Deep violet, indigo and near-black tones dominate the water, contrasted with warm yellow, orange and cream light from the buildings and their reflections. Paint is applied in thick, choppy strokes that mimic the movement of water and the shimmer of artificial light. The heavy impasto and nocturnal palette create a moody, glimmering atmosphere.
