About this work
A hill covered in dense, near-black trees rises across the middle of the canvas, its slope curving down toward a broad, motionless lake that fills the lower half of the composition. A thin vertical mark, perhaps a post or reed, breaks the water's surface near the center, while dark grassy ground closes off the foreground at the bottom edges.
The entire scene is bathed in a single glowing yellow-green tone that dominates both sky and water, with the hill and trees reduced to flat, near-black silhouettes against it. Brushwork is soft and blended, light falling evenly with no strong source visible, and the simplified, tonal treatment strips the landscape down to a few large shapes. The effect is hushed and still, with an almost eerie glow hanging over the water.
