About this work
A river curves back through a wooded landscape, its surface rendered as a bright, almost luminous pale streak against darker banks of dense trees and bushes on either side. A birch grove rises pale and ghostly at the upper left, and a small dark shape is faintly suggested where the water bends, giving a sense of scale to the wide curve.
The whole canvas is painted in close, blended tones of blue, grey-green and off-white, with almost no hard edges, so the river seems to emit its own soft light through the haze. Broad, soft strokes and the muted, unified palette create a hushed, enveloping atmosphere of mist and stillness.
