About this work
A weathered stone embankment cuts diagonally across the foreground, with small figures gathered along its edge near the water. Beyond it, dark waterbirds float on the rippled surface of a wide river, and a row of small boats with masts sits at anchor midstream, while a low, hazy shoreline with faint buildings closes the far distance.
A restrained grey palette of pearl, blue-grey, and rust brown captures the damp, overcast light, with the reddish stonework offering the only warmth in the scene.
