About this work
A tall, narrow building with an arched pediment and small windows rises at the center, catching light on its pale stone face while the sky behind darkens to deep blue. Lower buildings with arcaded ground floors flank it on both sides, their fronts sketched in with quick, broken lines suggesting a cramped urban lane.
The scene is built from washes of violet, ochre and slate blue, with the tower's sunlit facade left almost bare against the shadow around it. Contours are loosely drawn and left unfinished in places, giving the work the immediacy of a plein-air sketch and a quiet, mysterious atmosphere.
