About this work
A dense row of tall buildings crowds both banks of a canal, their facades dissolving into shadow while small lit windows glow gold at water level. A billowing plume of rose-pink cloud or smoke rises from the centre of the townscape into a pale sky, and the dark teal water in the foreground carries broken reflections of the buildings and the pink glow above.
Painted with loose, loaded impasto strokes, the palette contrasts a smouldering pink-orange upper register against deep blue-green water below. Brushwork is scraped and dragged, blurring architectural detail into atmosphere, and the overall effect is dramatic and hazy, an urban skyline half-dissolved in glowing mist and reflected light.
