About this work
Two glass jars stand side by side on a table. The left holds fresh orange-red roses with green leaves, while the right contains a taller, denser bunch of dark maroon and brown blooms that appear wilted and drying. Behind them a round mirror or tray reflects a glimpse of pale pink petals in soft blue tones.
Cool blue-grey surrounds the arrangement, against which the warm reds and oranges of the fresh roses stand out sharply, while the second bouquet is rendered in near-monochrome dark strokes. Loose, textured brushwork and the contrast between bloom and decay give the still life a quietly melancholic mood.
