About this work
A slender dark vessel holds a spray of pink hyacinth blossoms with a few pale companion flowers, while two wilted yellow-green blooms lie loose on the table in front. A cloth patterned with red, green and blue stripes spills in from the lower right against a plain dark ground.
Warm umber and burnt-sienna tones dominate the composition, broken by cool violet-grey at left and the sudden color burst of the striped fabric. Thick, textured brushwork and low, close lighting give the arrangement a somber, intimate mood, the wilting blossoms adding a note of quiet fading.
