About this work
Two heavily abstracted nude figures occupy a field of hot ochre and gold. At left a curled, compact form lies along a pale horizontal band; at right a larger crouching body bends forward, its rounded back and limbs merging into thick ridges of paint. Faces and features dissolve into texture, leaving only the general postures of bodies at rest or bathing.
The acrylic is applied in raised, cratered crusts, cracked and pooled like sun-baked mud, so the whole surface reads as much as relief as image. Warm yellows, ochres and rust-browns dominate, broken by two pale bands of white, giving the scene an intense, sunlit, almost molten energy rather than calm description of bathers.
