Tropical forest

Broad banana leaves and thin tree trunks crowd the composition from edge to edge, layered in overlapping planes that push toward a patch of pale sky visible through the canopy. Clusters of small red flowers or fruit dot the lower left corner, and a bare path of reddish earth cuts across the very bottom, the only clear ground amid the tangle of foliage.

Multiple shades of green, from acid yellow-green to deep bottle green, are applied in short, energetic strokes following the direction of each leaf and stem. Patches of violet-grey shadow and pale blue sky break up the foliage, suggesting strong light filtering through the canopy. The thick, gestural paint handling and dense composition create a humid, overgrown atmosphere.
