About this work
A crowded boat carries an assembly of elaborately costumed figures: musicians with pipes and drums, women in bonnets and ruffled collars, a bearded man playing a stringed instrument, a masked reveler in checkered stockings, and a piper seated at the stern. A long spear or pole and a striped sail rise from the vessel. In the foreground, a golden-tailed mermaid floats face-up on the water beside the hull, with small fish and bubbles drifting through the shallows.
The picture is bathed in soft, hazy pinks, golds and blues, with light diffusing evenly across skin and drapery rather than falling from one direction. Paint is applied in smooth, blended layers with softly modeled faces, giving the whole an airy, weightless quality more like a vision than a real voyage. The atmosphere is quiet, enchanted and faintly theatrical.
