About this work
A bearded man is shown in strict profile from the shoulders up, his hair short and his beard full, a wide sash or strap crossing diagonally over his chest and shoulder. The figure is drawn with fine pencil lines defining the face and hair, set against loose, irregular washes of brown ink spreading and pooling across the paper around him.
The palette is limited to warm sepia and brown tones on aged, blotchy paper, with the ink allowed to bleed and stain beyond the drawn lines. Precise pencil work on the face and beard contrasts with the freer, accidental-looking washes surrounding it.
