About this work

A woman's face appears through an oval opening cut into a large white folding fan she holds up with both hands; below the fan spreads a voluminous black-and-white checkerboard-patterned garment pooling on the ground. Around her sit several pale, crater-marked spherical orbs resembling small moons, while a golden crescent moon and red paper streamers with gold stars hang in the night sky at the upper right.

Deep blues and greys build a stormy, moonlit backdrop against the warm ochre earth beneath the figure, with smooth, carefully blended brushwork on the face and fabric folds. The strange substitution of fan for body and the scattering of moon-like spheres give the scene a theatrical, dreamlike unease.
