About this work
Two old wooden coffee mills with brass hardware stand on a table draped in a gold-patterned cloth, alongside a dark bottle, a metal moka pot and a shallow bowl. Above them a narrow shelf holds snapshots, a small portrait and a card lettered "COFFEE," and higher still, tilted frames, a profile portrait and floating grey rectangles are arranged as if pinned or propped against the wall.
Warm ochre and burnt-sienna tones in the lower still life give way to cooler greys above, where flat abstract color blocks intrude among the framed images, blurring the line between painted object and painted picture. The mix of naturalistic rendering below and disjointed, collage-like elements above lends the composition a quietly disorienting, staged quality.
