About this work
The drawing frames an old man's head and upper face in tight close-up, his long hair and full beard filling most of the sheet. His eyes are deeply set in shadow and half-lowered, the brow furrowed, giving the face a weary, inward expression; one ear and a hint of the shoulder are visible at the edge.
Built almost entirely in black ink on cream paper, the image relies on dense parallel hatching and flowing curved strokes to render the mass of hair and beard, leaving the face itself comparatively bare and pale by contrast. The graphic, high-contrast handling gives the portrait a brooding, somber weight.
