About this work

A cramped etching shows a row of gulag prisoners in striped uniforms standing before a wooden watchtower and barbed-wire fence. In the foreground, a bearded man shaves the head of a seated companion with a blade while other inmates crowd behind them, watching in silence.

Dense cross-hatched lines build heavy shadow across the paper, leaving only faces and hands lit by scratched highlights. The scratchy, agitated needlework of the etching gives the scene a raw, documentary starkness fitting its subject, evoking confinement, routine, and quiet endurance.
