About this work
A woman lies curled tightly on her side, knees drawn to her chest, one arm folded beneath her cheek and the other resting across her thighs, atop rumpled red satin and pale draped fabric. Behind her looms a massive banded seashell, its spiraled ridges echoing the curve of her body, filling most of the dark background.
Warm, focused light models the skin in smooth gradients of ivory and rose against the deep brown-black surroundings, while the shell's ridges are picked out in ochre, rust and cream glazes. The soft-edged, almost airbrushed finish and the theatrical spotlighting give the scene a hushed, dreamlike stillness centered on quiet vulnerability.
