About this work

A mask-like head with two pale, horn-like forms tops a churning mass of ribboned, twisting shapes that descend into a dark knotted core at the center. Wide horizontal bands of yellow and pale pink fill the background, over which fragments of stenciled and hand-scratched text are scattered near the upper edge, giving the composition a restless, unstable feel.

Paint is built up in thick impasto with a palette knife, scored and incised while still wet to expose the layers beneath. Ochre, magenta and dark umber sit unblended against the raw pink ground, and drips, scratches and inscribed words are worked directly into the surface. The overall effect is raw and agitated, charged with a chaotic, unresolved energy.
