About this work

A powerful, heavily muscled bald figure looms at upper left, gripping a long dagger and reaching out toward a pile of nude infants below. The children lie tangled together across the lower half of the canvas, eyes closed, limbs overlapping, while a disembodied arm reaches in from the upper right; patches of red and orange glow at the lower corners like embers.

The scene is rendered in a heavily textured, low-relief surface that gives the figures a corroded, sculptural quality, as if cast in aged bronze or stone. Saturated ultramarine blue fills the background, intensifying the warm ochre and grey-brown tones of the bodies, and the rough, pitted texture with dramatic top-lighting creates a tense, foreboding atmosphere.
