About this work
A reclining nude figure, modeled on an antique sculpture, stretches horizontally across the canvas with one arm bent beneath drapery that veils the head and face. The body is broken into distinct rectangular bands, each rendered as if carved from separate weathered wooden planks, so the figure appears assembled from salvaged boards rather than a single block of stone.
The palette is reduced to warm ivory and sepia tones for the figure against a black background, producing sharp, sculptural contrasts of light and shadow. Brushwork is smooth within each plank-like segment but breaks abruptly at the joins, echoing wood grain and seams. The effect is solemn and monumental, closer to a fragment of ruined statuary than a living body.
