About this work
A big, pale-furred primate crouches low amid dense green and yellow grass, its head thrown back and mouth open in a wide, screaming grimace. The body reads as a hunched mass of white and grey fur marked with patches of orange, red and ochre across the shoulders and head, set against an almost black background.
Paint is scraped, dragged and layered so the fur becomes a rough, sculptural crust of white, grey and rust tones, while thin threads of red weave through the upper body like scratches or wounds. Below, the grass is built from quick vertical strokes of green and yellow. The animal's cry combined with the tangled red marks gives the scene a violent, anguished mood.
