About this work
A man's face fills the canvas edge to edge, framed by a mass of tangled dark curls streaked with grey and a thick, unkempt beard. His large brown eyes are opened wide and fixed directly on the viewer, the brows raised, giving the face an alert, almost startled expression. The neck and a hint of bare shoulders are visible at the bottom edge against a dark ground.
Skin tones are built from warm ochre and pink against the cool blue-grey of the hair, painted with thick, energetic strokes that leave visible ridges of pigment. Light falls frontally, carving deep shadows around the eyes and cheekbones. The directness of the gaze and rough handling give the portrait an intense, confrontational presence.
