About this work
A pack of racehorses surges toward the viewer, hooves throwing up dust as jockeys in colored caps and silks crouch low over their mounts. In the foreground a rider on a chestnut horse throws one arm skyward in celebration, while behind him a dark horse and a grey horse press forward neck and neck, whips raised, with more riders crowding in from the right.
Warm sandy tans and dusty creams dominate the track and background, set against the dark bay and grey coats of the horses and flashes of red, white and blue in the jockeys' silks. Brushwork is loose and rapid, with horses' legs and manes dissolving into streaks that convey full gallop. The overall effect is one of speed, noise and finish-line excitement.
