About this work
Seen from above, a small huddle of buildings and a slender tower cling to a hillside above a curved bay where a few dark boats rest on pale water. A glowing round sun or moon hangs low in a golden sky above the distant shoreline.
The entire painting is worked in warm golds, ambers and browns, with heavy palette-knife strokes reducing buildings and water to loosely gestured shapes rather than fine detail. The glowing central light and dissolving forms give the landscape a hazy, radiant, almost dreamlike stillness.
