About this work
The many-colored onion domes and patterned brick facade of the Savior on Spilled Blood rise beyond a curving embankment street, framed by plain city buildings on either side and crossed by overhead wires. A green iron bridge in the foreground carries two figures sheltering under an open umbrella, while parked cars and passers-by line the wet pavement below.
Loose, textured strokes of ochre, rose and blue-grey capture the damp pavement and hazy sky, while the gilded and enamel-colored cupolas are built up with thicker, brighter dabs of paint. The soft overcast light and sketchy brushwork lend the view a quiet, atmospheric mood typical of a rainy city afternoon.
