About this work
A vast, billowing cloud rises over a dense skyline, with a large domed cathedral visible low on the horizon among smaller spires and rooftops. The city below is rendered as a glittering mass of small lit windows and reflections, suggesting a river or wet street catching the last light of day.
The cloud is built in thick, luminous strokes of cream, rose and pale gold that catch real light across the impasto ridges, fading into softer violet-grey at the edges of the sky. Below, warm ochres and dark umbers are dabbed thickly to suggest scattered city lights, giving the scene a hushed, glowing stillness.
