About this work
A stone balustrade lines the near bank of a calm river, with a row of buildings crowding the far shore, one topped by a small dome and spire. Bare trees stand at the left, and tiny indistinct figures move along the embankment and a distant bridge.
Lilac, powder blue and pale ochre are dabbed and dragged over the canvas in broken, textured strokes, dissolving architectural detail into atmosphere. The hazy, overcast light and soft color harmony give the view a quiet, dreamlike stillness.
