About this work
Three gondolas are moored to weathered poles in the foreground lagoon, an ornate iron lamppost rising at the water's edge beside them. Across the water, the brick campanile, dome, and long facade of San Giorgio Maggiore stretch along the horizon under a sky filled with dense, rolling clouds.
Grey-lilac clouds dominate the composition, their heavy, wind-tossed shapes rendered in thick, sweeping strokes, while the lagoon below takes on a cooler jade-green cast. The overall tone is muted and overcast, brushwork bolder and more agitated than in calmer views of the same scene, conveying a blustery, changeable day.
