About this work

An ornate tiered stone fountain, its basin ringed by a low balustrade, occupies a paved courtyard flanked by traditional houses with red tiled and metal roofs. Leafless plane trees rise around it, their pale trunks set against the buildings, while a scatter of golden fallen leaves covers the ground and drifts into the empty pool.

Muted grays, ochres and rust tones dominate under soft overcast light, with a patch of blue sky breaking through at upper left. Firm, descriptive brushwork renders stone, bark and rooftop tile with careful detail, giving the courtyard a hushed, late-autumn stillness.
