About this work

Seen from an elevated vantage point, a dense cluster of city rooftops, chimneys and gable ends fills the foreground, their planes overlapping at varied angles. Beyond and above them, the golden dome of St. Isaac's Cathedral emerges against a pale, hazy sky, set back in the middle distance as the focal point of the skyline.

The palette is restrained and tonal, built from soft greys, warm creams and muted browns, with the dome's gilding providing the only note of warmer gold. Loose, dry brushwork describes the rooftops with economy, while the sky is left smooth and atmospheric, giving the view a quiet, overcast calm typical of a northern city morning.
