About this work
Seen from an elevated vantage over the rooftops, a domed cathedral and a smaller corner turret with a spire rise above a dense huddle of city buildings along the low horizon. The sky occupies most of the canvas, filled with billowing clouds tinted pink, gold and grey around a bright, hazy center.
Thick, loaded strokes of impasto build the clouds and rooftops, with softer blended passages describing the glowing sky. The warm sunset palette against cooler city greys creates a dramatic, atmospheric contrast, and the loose, energetic brushwork gives the skyline a sense of shifting light and movement.
