About this work
A high vantage point looks across a dense huddle of old-city rooftops dusted with snow, with dozens of brick and stucco chimney pots rising in staggered rows. Gabled and hipped roofs recede toward a paler cluster of buildings in the distance, one reddish-brown facade standing out at the right, while small dormer windows and skylights punctuate the snow-covered slopes.
The watercolor is built from soft, overlapping washes of ochre, tan, dove-grey and rust, with the white of the paper left bare for snow. Loose, atmospheric brushwork blurs the horizon into the overcast sky, while sharper touches define chimney edges and window openings in the foreground, giving the quiet winter view a hushed, still atmosphere.
