About this work
A row of tall embankment buildings lines a frozen canal, their steep roofs and chimneys capped with snow. Large snowflakes drift through the air in front of the facades, while lit windows glow amber and blue in the fading light. A dark stone parapet runs along the water's edge, and a lone white bird rests on the ice below.
The palette shifts from cool blue-grey sky to warm ochre window light, with thick dabs of white paint marking the falling snow against smoother, more blended brushwork on the buildings. The contrast of warm interior glow against cold exterior gloom gives the small panel a hushed, wintry stillness.
