About this work
A multi-arched stone bridge crosses a wide river, its parapet lined with statues set against a pale, clouded sky. A domed building and dark trees rise on the left bank, while rooftops and a tower appear on the right. The bridge's reflection, broken into streaks of turquoise, brown and grey, fills most of the water below.
Loose, broad strokes of blue, ochre, brown and grey build the view wet-into-wet, the water rendered in slashing, unblended marks rather than fine detail. Cool tones and a soft, overcast light give the scene a hazy, atmospheric calm typical of a quick plein-air impression.
