About this work

A low stone bridge spans a canal lined on both sides with pastel apartment buildings in rose, ochre and cream. Newly leafed trees, still delicate and pale green, frame the view on either side, and small figures cross the bridge in the middle distance. The water occupies the lower half of the canvas, carrying soft, broken reflections of the buildings and sky above.

A hazy, pale blue sky sets a gentle, diffused light over the scene, with warm building facades built from layered strokes of ochre and rose. The canal surface is worked in cool blues and greens interrupted by warm reflected color, applied with visible, textured brushstrokes. The overall handling is soft and airy, suggesting a mild, still spring morning.
