About this work
Two white storks with red beaks and legs are perched at a large twig nest high in a bare tree; one stands at the nest, the other flies in gripping a twig. Below, dense billowing cloud- or foam-like shapes cascade past reeds toward a dark marsh. At the base of the sheet, a large pike swims among round lily pads and a few yellow water-lily blossoms.
The scene is built almost entirely in black ink, using fine stippling and hatching to model the storks' feathers, the pike's scales and the tangled nest, against untouched white paper for the clouds. Only the birds' red beaks and legs and the lilies' yellow petals break the monochrome, giving the image a hushed, contemplative, faintly mysterious quality.
