About this work
Viewed from a steep, tilted vantage, a corroded metal vent pipe rises from a pale zinc roof edged with metal railings beside a rounded chimney stack. Below, the many-windowed wall of a tall building drops away in sharp perspective, while a scattering of small dark birds crosses the grey sky above distant rooftops.
Muted ochre, rust and grey dominate, applied in confident diagonal strokes that describe the ridged metal roofing and weathered stonework. The overcast palette stays subdued throughout, the birds reduced to quick dark marks, lending the scene a quiet, watchful stillness suspended high above the street.
